Hrithik Rings In 34th Birthday

Actor Hrithik Roshan turns 34 today. The actor has decided to spend a quiet birthday with his family and close ones. He and his family will be having a havan and pooja this morning at their residence. The pooja will be followed by a family lunch. Clearly, the Jodha Akbar actor, who is still recuperating from his knee injury, is no mood for celebrations.

Films were a part of Hirthik's legacy. What with his grandfather being the famous music director of yore, Roshan; his father Rakesh Roshan is an actor, his uncle Rajesh Roshan, a music composer, and his maternal grandfather, J Om Prakash, a film director. It was in that sense, a very filmy environment into which the young Hrithik was born and bred. He made his mark as a child actor itself when he gave a stellar performance in Bhagwan Dada and Aap Ke Deewane, both which starred his father as well. But it was in the year 2000, the new millennium, that Hrithik emerged as the superstar with the blockbuster Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, directed by his father. A star had definitely arrived and Hrithik bagged many awards that year for his debut venture. He went onto give a critically acclaimed performance in Khalid Mohammed's Fiza and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Mission Kashmir.

The following year saw him deliver the first dud of his career, Subhash Ghai's Yaadein. But it was followed by Karan Johar's Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, where he managed to hold his own against veterans like Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. The year 2002 proved to be a little unlucky for Hrithik as his films like Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Na Tum Jaano Na Hum and Aap Mujhe Acche Lagne Lage, flopped miserably. But he bounced back in 2003 with Koi Mil Gaya, again directed by his father. Farhan Akhtar's Lakshya followed and even though the film did not do too well, his performance as always, came in for a lot of praise. Hrithik took a two-year break before he bounced back with Krrish, a sequel to Koi Mil Gaya and Dhoom 2, a sequel to the earlier Dhoom. Now, all eyes are set on Ashutosh Gowarikar's magnum opus Jodha Akbar. Hrithik's strength as an actor has always been his superb body language, and his knack for getting into the skin of his character. There is absolutely no doubt that in his generation of actors, he is head and shoulders above the rest. We all would like to wish him a very happy birthday.!

Vidya Throws a Fit on Sets of Kismet Connection

Generally known to be a very down-to-earth person, actress Vidya Balan surprised onlookers when she threw a fit on the sets of her film Kismet Connection.

Vidya refused to wear the clothes designed for her by Aki Narula, leading to a huge drama on the sets of the film. It is believed that Vidya hated the costumes designed by Aki so much that she even flung aside one of the dresses angrily on the sets. Aki, who is at his wit's end, is believed to have opted out of the film as he could not cope with Vidya's demands. Apparently Vidya had earlier gone on record to say that she was a fan of Aki's and then she suddenly starting finding fault with his designs. She felt they did not suit her image in the movie. This, despite the fact that Aki followed the brief that was given to him for the movie. According to sources, someone from the unit told the actress that she was not looking as glamorous as she was supposed to because of Aki's clothes. Of course, none of the parties are available for comments.

'Shah Rukh is ours!'

'Shah Rukh is ours!', a Malaysian newspaper said in its editorial applauding the conferment of Datukship on the Bollywood superstar.

Nursing an arm injured during a film shoot last Friday, Shah Rukh flew in Saturday on a brief visit to be the first foreign actor to receive the award amidst rapturous ovation and took a rickshaw ride through Malacca, winning hearts of the citizenry.

The newspaper ridiculed critics at home, particularly some local artistes, who asked 'what has he done that we have not?' saying the award to Khan had 'evoked rather more bluster than it warranted.'

Justifying the decision of the Malacca state to confer the award on Shah Rukh Khan, the editorial said: 'Sadly for them, the answer is not what Shah Rukh has done but who he is. And who he is, is not just a fabulously successful 43-year-old film star with global recognition and vast masses of devoted fans'.

Trying to strike a balance in its praise, the newspaper said: 'No, our latest Datuk's personal assets and career achievements themselves did not justify the honour. Nor, frankly, do his movies, particularly not 'One 2 Ka 4', the last of his six movies to be shot in Malaysia, featuring a sequence of Shah Rukh and leading lady Juhi Chawla disporting themselves around a Famosa.'

'This may or may not have boosted Malacca's tourism; when a star of Shah Rukh's incandescence is on screen, everything else tends to be reduced to, well, scenery,' the editorial said, adding the justification for this award was proven at the ceremony itself, when his simple presence was enough to send the assembled dignitaries into a twittering fluster of swoons.

'Malacca, from Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob (the royal head of state) down, is enraptured by Shah Rukh Khan and unashamed to admit it. The award was an excuse to show it.
The popularity goes beyond the estimated 2.5 million ethnic Indians who form eight percent of Malaysia's 28 million population.
